d100 Recipes: Shepherd’s Pie and Banana Bread

When you have a long night of gaming ahead of you, you want a proper hearty meal to keep you going, and that’s precisely what we got for you here: the dinner of champions.

Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients

  • 4 large potatoes
  • 1 large egg
  • 500g/1lb beef mince
  • 2 rashers of bacon
  • 1 onion
  • 3 tablespoons of tomato sauce/ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1 beef stock cube
  • 1 ½ cup of frozen mixed vegetables
  • Cheese for topping

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Baking tin
  • Baking/parchment paper
  • Stove top/hob

Method

  • Wash, peel and roughly cut up the potatoes, and boil them in a saucepan until cooked.
  • Drain the potatoes and mash them up.
  • When they are a bit cooled, mix in the egg and season with salt and pepper
  • Cut up your bacon and fry it and the beef in a frying pan
  • Chop up the onion and add that into the frying pan along with the tomato sauce/ketchup, Worcestershire sauce and mustard
  • Dissolve the stock cube in ½ cup of boiling water and add that in to the meat with the mixed vegetables and cook it all together for a couple of minutes
  • Put the meat and vege mix into baking tin and top with the mashed potatoes and cheese
  • Cook for about 20 minutes and serve hot

Banana Bread

Ingredients

  • 2 cups self raising flour (or 2 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking powder)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 170g butter
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs (3 if they are small)
  • 80g yoghurt
  • 2 cups mashed up bananas
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Baking tin (approx 22cmx12cm/9”x5”)
  • Baking/parchment paper

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 180C/350F.
  • Line a baking tin with baking/parchment paper.
  • Cream together the butter and sugar
  • Add in eggs one at a time and mix thoroughly
  • Mix in the yoghurt, bananas and vanilla
  • Add in the dry ingredients and mix through, but don’t overmix
  • Pour the mix into your baking tin and bake for 30 minutes
  • Check the centre of the banana bread with a knife or skewer, if it’s still wet, bake for another 10 minutes and check again

After the banana bread is baked, you can freeze it for up to 3 months.

d100 Recipes: Chewy Choc Chip Cookies & Hot Chocolate

Since it’s getting onto winter here in the southern hemisphere, we’ve got some snacks and drinks that will make your game nights warm, cozy and comfy, like a good winter’s night should be.

Chewy Choc Chip Cookies

Ingredients

  • 200g/7 ounces butter
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla essence
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 cups of chocolate chips

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Baking trays
  • Baking/parchment paper

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 180C/350F.
  • Line a baking sheet with baking/parchment paper.
  • Make sure your butter is room temperature and soft
  • Cream together the butter and sugars.
  • Mix in the eggs one at a time, and then the vanilla essence
  • Mix in the flour, baking powder and salt
  • Lastly, mix through the chocolate chips.
  • Roll the dough into balls and place onto the baking sheet, making sure to leave around 2cm/1 inch space between them all.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes.

You can always freeze the dough, and keep it for a later date!

Hot Chocolate

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 3 cups whole fat milk
  • 200g/7 ounces dark/semisweet chocolate
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • Whipped cream and cocoa powder for serving

Equipment

  • Stovetop/hob

Method

  • Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan, and turn the heat down to a low simmer.
  • Add in the cocoa powder and whisk it until no lumps remain.
  • Pour in the milk and bring it back to a simmer.
  • Add in the chocolate and sugar, and whisk continually until all the chocolate has melted, approx 5 minutes or so.
  • Pour into mugs, and top with some whipped cream and more cocoa powder.

Makes around 4 or 5 mugs’ worth.

d100 Recipes: Bacon & Egg Slice, Mum’s Apple Tart

What’s better than having a night with your friends, enjoying each other’s company, and immersing yourself in a fantastical adventure? Doing so with some good comfort food. This time we’ll show you how to make a good and filling meal in the bacon & egg slice, and a tasty desert with my mum’s apple tart recipe.

Bacon & Egg Slice

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets Pre-rolled savoury short pastry
  • ½ cup Tomato ketchup
  • 6 large eggs
  • ½ cup cream/milk
  • Enough streaky bacon

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Baking tin (approx 30cm x 22cm/12” x 8”)
  • Baking/parchment paper

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 200C/390F.
  • Line a baking sheet with baking/parchment paper.
  • Line the bottom and sides of the baking tin with the pastry
  • Spread the tomato ketchup over the pastry, and lay the bacon rashers over that
  • Thoroughly mix together the cream/milk and eggs and pour on top of the bacon
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and the egg mixture is set

Mum’s Apple Tart

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup flour + 1 teaspoon baking powder (or just 1 cup self raising flour)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 can of sliced apples

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Baking dish (approx round 22cm/10”)
  • Electric mixer

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 180C/350F
  • Cream together the sugar and butter (mix them together until they turn light, pale and airy)
  • Add in the eggs, one at a time while continuing to mix
  • Sift in the flour, baking powder and salt and mix well
  • Drain the apples of any juice and pour the apple slices into the mixture, and gently fold them in
  • Pour the mixture into the baking dish and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until you can stick a knife into the centre and it comes out clean

d100 Recipes: Cheese Twists and Dirty Lemonade

We don’t just want to bring you great games, mods and adventures. We also want to make your gaming sessions amazing. And to help with that, we’re starting a new series on the blog: d100 Recipes. Over the next year or so, we’ll be showing you 100 recipes that are easy, tasty and filling. Even if you have never cooked before in your life, we’re sure you’ll be able to tackle some of these recipes to make your gaming nights more wholesome and fun.

To start it all off, here’s a tasty snack and a drink:

Cheese Twists

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets – Pre-rolled, partly thawed puff pastry
  • 2 cups – Grated cheese of your choice
  • 1 Tbsp – Herbs and spices
  • 1 – Egg
  • Some flour for dusting

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Baking Trays
  • Baking/parchment paper
  • Rolling Pin

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 200C/390F.
  • Line a baking sheet with baking/parchment paper.
  • Grate your cheese and mix through your herbs and spices.

We recommend a hard cheese such as Parmesan or Cheddar; and paprika, cayenne and some garlic salt for the spices.

  • Dust your work surface slightly with some flour and spread out the sheets of puff pastry.
  • Mix the egg thoroughly and give each sheet a good egg wash.
  • Sprinkle half the cheese onto one of the pastry sheets in an even layer.
  • Cover the cheese with the other pastry sheet, making sure that the egg washed side is facing up.
  • Sprinkle your remaining cheese onto the pastry sheet.
  • Get a rolling pin and flatten your cheese filled pastry sheets, making sure to keep it rectangular in shape.

What you are aiming to do here is force the cheese into the pastry

  • Cut the cheesy pastry into 2cm/1inch strips.
  • Take each strip and twist them at opposite ends, and put them on your baking sheet about 2cm/1 inch apart.
  • Bake your cheese twists for 12-15 minutes, and then let them cool completely before enjoying them.

You can always make the cheese twists in advance. Instead of baking them, you can put them in an airtight container and freeze them for up to 3 months. Then when you want, you can bake them straight from frozen for 15-18 minutes.

Dirty Lemonade

Ingredients

  • 2 – Lemons
  • 500ml/1 pint – water
  • Sugar to taste

Equipment

  • Blender/food processor

Method

  • Wash your lemons, cut them into wedges and remove the pith and seeds from them.
  • Put the lemons (rind included) and the in the blender/food processor and blend them until you get a smooth(ish) lemonade.

If it’s a particularly hot day, you can substitute some of the water for ice cubes, or even freeze some of the lemon wedges before you blend them.

  • Have a taste since the lemon rind can make the lemonade a bit bitter, and add some sugar and blend it again.
  • Keep adding sugar until you get the right amount of sweetness.
